Macrotexturated breast implants from the company Allergan are statistically speaking more implicated in the number of diagnosed ALCL cases, however the French government banned all macrotexturated and polyurethane implants involving all the major companies in the world (Sebbin, Nagor, Polytech, Eurosilicone, Arion, etc) of course this has created a major concern and confusion among the general population, the patients with breast implants and their families.

Here are some advices of what to do:

1- The alarm only concerns macrotexturated implants. Smooth and micro-texturated implants are of less concern. Check the card that your surgeon gave you after the procedure and verify if your implant is on the list.
2- Book a follow up appointment with your surgeon. He or she will evaluate and inform you. They will also probably organize an ultrasound to evaluate the implants and their souranding capsule’s health.
3- Given our clinical experience in most cases the ultrasound will demonstrate that no problem is present. In that case the surgeon and patient should meet once per year for a routine check-up. There is no need to explant and change a healthy implant unless the patient desires so.
4- In the case where the ultrasound shows the presence of liquid around the implant then a ponction to aspirate a sample may be organize. The sample can then be analyzed for an accurate diagnosis. The presence of liquid is normal in a big number of patients and should not be alarming. Once the result demonstrate that the evolution is normal, then a year control should be done. Again explantation is not advised.
5- In the rare scenario in which a problem is detected then the breast implants and its capsules should be removed. A new implant with smooth or microtexturated surface can be re implanted. Aesthetics Clinic advices to refer all your questions to your surgeon or the local society of plastic surgery.
